From May 28, foreign tourists are able to read recommendations from a number of Latvian tourism associations regarding which places in Riga are safe to go to.
Latvian Hotel and Restaurant Association President Janis Naglis, Riga Criminal Police Chief Ints Kuzis and several Riga councilmen, including the Tourism and Coordination and Information Center's Deputy Director Dainis Bricis and Riga City Council Business Coordination Center Director Ervins Labanovskis also took part in the meeting.
Kuzis informed that the number of nightclubs where foreign tourists get cheated out of their money is increasing in Riga. "Similar cases are also being reported from hotels and bars now, it is like making a little money on the side for the hotel and bar staffs," said Kuzis, adding that the most common tourist scam is taking a foreign tourist's bankcard and making large withdrawals from the person's bank account.
According to Kuzis, a special task force has been set up by the Criminal Police that deals specifically with tourist scams. The most frequent complaints in April and May were received about the nighclubs "Lord Pub" at 22 Kalku Street, "Saxon" at 7 Laipu Street and "Mary" at 13 Audeju Street.
Naglis went on to say that members of the Hotel and Restaurant Association will start providing information to foreign tourists about places where they better not go to in Riga.
