Santa Claus visited Riga on Sunday, Nov 30, 2008 to observe the lighting of the world's First Christmas Tree.
The tree lighing took place in Old Town Square next to the Historic House of Blackheads. The most well-known of Christmas traditions - decorating the Christmas tree - may have its origin in Latvia. And it's all but unknown.
When searching for the historical beginning of the first Christmas tree, one must go very deep into the past. Just like Santa Claus one finds that the first Christmas tree was combination of many different facts, legends and customs all starting in the Baltic countries and what is now Northern Germany.
The single men merchant members of the Hanseatic League's Fraternity of Blackheads documented the first usage of a tree in a holiday celebration in their chronicles of 1509 / 1510.
