An eyewitness of the premiere in 1892, wrote: There was no end to the enthusiasm of the audience. I remember, I counted how many curtain calls Pyotr Ilyich took, but after eighteen I lost count. And what happened after the curtain dropped at the end of Act I (The Snowflakes Waltz!). The auditorium screamed and shouted, people stamped their feet, many leaned back in their chairs tired of both shouting and clapping hands, tears of delight shone in their eyes.
